About the Campaign

FOB LogoHere in Southern Alberta, we live in a dry environment, yet our per capita water consumption is among the highest in the world. Meanwhile, water flows in the Bow River are diminishing (due to global climate change and glacial recession) and our population is on the rise. These factors are putting increased pressure on the Bow River - and on the people who rely on it for their health and livelihoods.

Bow Riverkeeper's Friend of the Bow campaign works with communities and citizens in the Bow River watershed. We live in a dry environment, yet we are among the highest per capita water users in the world.We are encouraging individuals like you to make commitments to reduce your water consumption. See our commitment form for a list of some simple actions you can take. Please join us in ensuring the Bow River's future health. And please encourage others to join as well.

Our Work to Date

  • Created partnerships with many communities along the Bow River including the Town of Banff, Town of Canmore and Epcor Water Services, Town of Cochrane, Chiniki First Nation, City of Calgary, and Siksika First Nation;
  • Distributed water saving devices to several hundred people. Thank you to the City of the Calgary and Epcor Water Services for donating the water saving devices!
  • Established partnerships with other organizations - such as Clean Calgary and the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley - to advance water conservation in our communities;
  • Distributed our public information materials to thousands of watershed residents;
  • Reached thousands of people through presentations and media outreach efforts;
  • Inspired hundreds of people to make commitments to introduce water conservation measures to their daily lives. To date, these commitments account for over 300,000 litres of water conserved every week!
